Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower, and you it’s only seed.
It’s the heart, afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance.
It’s the dream, afraid of waking, that never takes a chance.
It’s the one who won’t be taken, who cannot seem to give.
And the soul, afraid of dyin’, that never learns to live.
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun’s love, in the spring becomes The Rose.
Composed by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell
Performed by The Hollies (1969)
The road is long
With many a winding turns
That leads us to who knows where,
Who knows where.
But I’m strong,
Strong enough to carry him.
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.
So on we go.
His welfare is of my concern.
No burden is he to bear,
We’ll get there.
For I know
We would not encumber me.
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.
If I’m laden at all,
I’m laden with sadness
That everyone’s heart
Isn’t filled with the gladness
Of love for one another.
It’s a long, long road
From which there is no return.
While we’re on the way to there,
Why not share?
And the load
Doesn’t weigh me down at all.
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.
When I said I needed you
You said you would always stay
It wasn’t me who changed but you
And now you’ve gone away
Don’t you see that now you’ve gone
And I’m left here on my own
That I have to follow you
And beg you to come home
You don’t have to say you love me
Just be close at hand
You don’t have to stay forever
I will understand
Believe me, believe me
I can’t help but love you
But believe me, I’ll never tie you down
Left alone with just a memory
Life seems dead and so unreal
All that’s left is loneliness
There’s nothing left to feel
You don’t have to say you love me
Just be close at hand
You don’t have to stay forever
I will understand
Believe me, believe me…
You don’t have to say you love me
Just be close at hand
You don’t have to stay forever
I will understand
Believe me, believe me, believe me

You are the song
Playing so softly in my heart
I reach for you
You seem so near yet so far
I hope and I pray
You’ll be with me someday
I know down inside
You are my and I’m your true love
Or am I dreaming…
How can I
Each time I try to say goodbye
You were there
You look my way I touch the sky
We can share tomorrow and forevermore
I’ll be there to love you so
You are my song
I know for sure
That we were meant to fall in love
I look in your eyes
I know what you’re thinking of
I try not to say
The words that might scare you away
I know down inside
You are my and I’m your true love
Please no more dreaming…
How can I
Each time I try to say goodbye
You were there
You look my way I touch the sky
We can share tomorrow and forevermore
I’ll be there to love you so
You are my song
You are my song
We can share tomorrow and forevermore
I’ll be there to love you so
You are my song
You are my song

Yesterday when I was young
the taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue.
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game,
the way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame.
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built alas on weak and shifting sand.
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of the day
and only now I see how the years ran away.
Yesterday when I was young
so many drinking songs were waiting to be sung,
so many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
and so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see.
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out,
I never stopped to think what life was all about
and every conversation I can now recall
concerned itself with me and nothing else at all.
Yesterday the moon was blue
and every crazy day brought something new to do.
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
and never saw the waste and emptiness beyond.
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
and every flame I lit too quickly quickly died.
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
and only I am left on stage to end the play.
There are so many songs in me that won’t be sung,
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue.
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young.
It’s late in the evening,
she’s wondering what clothes to wear.
She puts on her make-up
and brushes her long blonde hair.
And then she asks me,
“Do I look all right?”
And I say,
“Yes, you look wonderful tonight”
We go a party
and everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady
that’s walking around with me
And then she asks me,
“Do you feel all right?”
And I say,
“Yes, I feel wonderful tonight”
I feel wonderful because I see
The love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don’t realize
How much I love you
It’s time to go home now
and I’ve got an aching head
So I give her the car keys
and she helps me to bed
And then I tell her,
as I turn out the light
I say,
“My darling, you were wonderful tonight
Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight”
She’s faced the hardest times
You could imagine
And many times her eyes
Fought back the tears
And when her youthful world
Was about to fall in
Each time her slender shoulders
Bore the weight of all her fears
And the song that no one hears
Still rings in midnight silence
In her ears
Let her cry
For she’s a lady
Let her dream
For she’s a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She’s a free and gentle flower
Growing wild
And if by chance that I should hold her
Let me hold her for a time
And if allowed but one possession
I will pick her from the garden
To be mine
Be careful how you touch her
For she’ll awaken
For sleep’s the only freedom that she knows
And when you look into her eyes
You won’t believe
The way she’s always paying
For a debt she never owes
And the silent wind still blows
That only she can hear
And so she goes
Let her cry
For she’s a lady
Let her dream
For she’s a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She’s a free and gentle flower
Growing wild
Let her cry
For she’s a lady
Let her dream
For she’s a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She’s a free and gentle flower
Growing wild
I know it’s been some time
But there’s something on my mind
You see, I haven’t been the same
Since that cold November day…
We said we needed space
But all we found was an empty place
And the only thing I learned
Is that I need you desperately…
So here I am
And can you please tell me… oh
Chorus:
Where do broken hearts go
Can they find their way home
Back to the open arms
Of a love that’s waiting there
And if somebody loves you
Won’t they always love you
I look in your eyes
And I know that you still care, for me
I’ve been around enough to know
That dreams don’t turn to gold
And that there is no easy way
No you just can’t run away…
And what we have is so much more
Than we ever had before
And no matter how I try
You’re always on my mind
Repeat chorus
And now that I am here with you
I’ll never let you go
I look into your eyes
And now I know, now I know…
It’s not how long we held each other’s hand
What matters is how well we love each other
It’s not how far we’ve traveled on our way
But what we found to say
It’s not the spring we’ve seen
But all the shades of green.
It’s not how long I held you in my arms
What matters is how sweet the years together
It’s not how many summertime
We have to give to fall
The early morning smile
We cheerfully recall.
What matters most
Is that we love at all.
It’s not how many summertime
We have to give to fall
The early morning smile
We cheerfully recall
